Levels of athletes identified

Triathlon Québec assigns athletes in the program the Excellence, Élite, Relève and Espoir identification levels. This categorization comes from the Ministère de l’Éducation, des Loisirs et des Sports and applies to all sports.

The federation's raison d'être

Identification criteria are issued by Triathlon Québec at the beginning of the year. Athletes who reach these levels become eligible for refundable tax credits from the Quebec government, as well as many other benefits. The identification period is from January 1 to December 31 of the current year. This list is updated in January of each year.

Eligibility requirements

Triathlon Québec presents the eligibility, commitment and performance criteria for its Excellence Program. These conditions apply to the Excellence, Élite, Relève and Espoir levels, according to the Ministry’s requirements. The identification period runs from January 1 to December 31, 2024.

  • Be a member of Triathlon Québec for the year 2024
  • Be at least 16 years old on December 31, 2024
  • Be a permanent resident of Quebec and file a Quebec income tax return
  • Represent Canada at international events and Québec at national events
  • Have a coach recognized by Triathlon Québec as the first person involved in his or her daily training environment and responsible for his or her annual program.
  • Be a member of Triathlon Québec for the year 2024
  • Between the ages of 12 and 23
  • Have permanent resident status in Quebec
  • Represent Canada at international events and Québec at national events

Entry conditions for identified athletes

  • Take part in at least three competitions corresponding to the athlete’s category (ITU races, Grand Prix series, races targeted by Triathlon Québec), excluding provincial championships.
  • Take part in the Quebec Junior or Elite Championships in 2024 unless they have previously obtained an exemption from their provincial coach due to injury, illness or any other exceptional circumstance.
  • Take part in events determined by Triathlon Québec as part of the program, such as tests and training camps, unless there is a valid reason for not doing so.
  • Respect all the terms and conditions of the 2023 Triathlon Québec Excellence Program athlete agreement and commit to signing the 2024 agreement (see Appendix 1).
  • Take part in a minimum of three provincial triathlon competitions corresponding to the athlete’s category (Coupe du Québec U13, U15, Junior, Jeux du Québec, Grand Prix Series)[1].
  • Be part of a training and competition program on an annual basis (10 months out of 12) with a minimum weekly volume of 10 hours.
  • For athletes aged 12 to 17, take part in a regional or provincial development camp in the current or previous year[2].

[1]Approved events may include Triathlon Québec identification days or intra-club testings, provided they comply with the standardized procedure for time trials.

[2] The camp can be replaced by an intra-club camp or program that covers different skills from the 1-2-TRI GO! program.

Performance review

  • Take part in a sanctioned event whose distance is approved by the Fédération d’athlétisme du Québec (FAQ) or the Fédération de Natation du Québec (FNQ) OR in events approved[1] between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024 by Triathlon Québec to meet at least one of the performance standards established by discipline, as described below[2].
  • Provide critical power values over 1 minute, 5 minutes, 20 minutes in cycling for the period from January 1 to July 15, 2024 and from July 16 to December 31, 2024 AND participate in Triathlon Québec test events.
  • Take part in at least three ITU competitions on the international circuit and/or three Grand Prix Series events

  • For athletes aged 12 to 15, meet the success criteria for level 7 of the 1-2-TRI GO! program, evaluated by a recognized coach.

athlete ranking

To be eligible for Elite identification, athletes must have met elite swimming and running performance standards.

  1. Athlete selected by Triathlon Canada for the Olympic Games or Elite World Championships
  2. Athlete selected by Triathlon Canada for the U23 World Championships
  3. Athlete with an ITU world ranking in the top 150 on November 30, 2024
  4. Athlete selected by Triathlon Canada for the U23/Junior World Junior or Relay Championships
  5. Athlete who achieved one of the following priorities between January 1, 2024 and November 30, 2024 while finishing in the top third of athletes who started:
    1. Top 25 in ITU or WCTS World Cups
    2. Top 12 in Elite Continental Cup
    3. Twice – Top 20 in Elite Continental Cup or Top 12 in Junior Continental Cup

If there is a tie in any of the above criteria, the order of the ITU World Ranking as of November 30, 2024 will be used to rank the athletes.

If elite identifications remain vacant after these priorities, athletes born after January 1, 2001 who have met at least one elite standard and one feeder standard will be nominated in the above order of priority, then in order of final cumulative Grand Prix Series ranking.

To be eligible for a feeder ID, athletes must have met the feeder swimming and running performance standards AND have been born after January 1, 2001.

  1. Athlete who achieved one of the following priorities between January 1, 2024 and November 30, 2024 while finishing in the top third of athletes who started:
    1. Top 20 in Elite Continental Cup
    2. Top 12 in Junior Continental Cup
  2. Ranking of athletes in the order of the final cumulative ranking of the 2024 Grand Prix Series, provided they meet the feeder standards in both disciplines.

If there are still vacant feeder identifications after these priorities, athletes born after January 1, 2005 who have met at least one feeder standard will be nominated in order of Grand Prix Series ranking.
