University series

Are you a student with a passion for triathlon? Take part in the competition by joining the university series! This circuit is specially designed to combine sporting performance and team spirit, while proudly representing your school. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or looking for a new challenge, this is the perfect opportunity to excel.

What is the university series?

Triathlon Québec’s University Series aims to involve student-athletes attending university institutions in a variety of multisport events during the school calendar (September 1 to June 1).

This series enables higher education institutions to accumulate points in a network of competitions by their athletes affiliated with Triathlon Québec. Race formats are varied: aquathlon, sprint triathlon with or without sprinting, time trial or mixed relay.

There are three separate rankings: (1) women’s, (2) men’s and (3) combined. A banner will be awarded to the school or schools winning each classification, and a trophy will be awarded to the school winning the combined classification until the next season. The trophy is the property of Triathlon Québec and will be awarded annually.

Upcoming events in the university series

The calendar is made up of five stages of different formats. All events count towards the final ranking.

Here are the eligibility rules for participating in the series:

  • Be a full-time student at a university (minimum of nine credits per session). No age limit.
  • Be a TQ annual member before taking part in the events

To register for the university series, go to MS1 registration, choose the event you want to take part in and select the “university” event for individual registration. For relays, you must choose the relay open to all, then answer yes to the question asking if you are participating in the university series. You can then choose the name of your educational establishment from the drop-down menu.

  • A school may enter as many athletes as it wishes.
  • Individual event: the three best women’s results and the three best men’s results per school count towards the ranking for each stage.
  • Relay event: the two best teams in the school are counted in the ranking for this stage.

In case of incomplete quota

  • In the event that a school has no athletes in either gender, the school will receive no points for that gender’s ranking stage.
    • Example: if there is one man and no women, the establishment will be able to accumulate points in the men’s ranking, but not in the women’s ranking.
  • If a school does not have three athletes per gender, the missing athletes will automatically be added to the last row to complete the score, as long as there is at least one participating athlete in that gender.
    • Example: a school sends two men and one woman out of a total of 29 men and 24 women to the start of the event. Even if the contingent is incomplete, the establishment can accumulate points on both rankings (men and women). The rankings for the missing 3rd man and the missing 2nd and 3rd women will be 30th for men and 25th and 26th for women respectively. Points will be calculated according to these fictitious additions.
  • The same principle applies to relay events. If a school sends only one team, the missing team will be added to the last place for scoring. If a school sends no team, no points will be awarded. The addition of the two teams “ranks determines the schools” ranking. This ranking is converted into a score on the 1,200-point scale below.

Ranking and scoring

There are three distinct classifications:

  • Women
  • Men
  • Combined

Women’s ranking

Represents the sum of the rankings of the top three female athletes by institution. The university with the lowest result finishes in first place.

Men’s ranking

Contains the rankings of the top three male athletes by institution. The university with the lowest result finishes in first place.

Combined ranking

Constitutes the sum of the scores of the women’s and men’s classifications, as well as the score of relay events.

Individual events are scored on 1,000 points, while relay events are scored on 1,200 points. The cumulative score for each university is calculated in four stages:

  1. Athletes have an individual ranking according to their position
  2. Universities receive a score based on the top three male and female positions
  3. In the event of a tie between two schools, the position of the university’s best athlete (male or female) will break the tie.
  4. The score is converted to 1,000 or 1,200 points depending on the type of race.
