Swimrun combines open-water swimming and trail running, from point A to point B. There is no set distance or conventional transition zone (as in triathlon).
When it comes to equipment, anything goes. Athletes can don their hypothermic wetsuit, use fins, paddles, snorkel or whatever, but must carry their equipment from start to finish. Strategy is the key to this extraordinary event.
Swimrun was invented in Sweden in the early 2000s by four friends who challenged each other over a beer to cover the distance between two hotels on two different islands.
From this evening was born the first official edition of Ötillö (“Ötillö” means “from island to island”), in Stockholm in 2006.
