Triathlon Québec is proud to present its Athletes of the Month, two personalities who have distinguished themselves through their sporting achievements and their commitment to the triathlon community. For the month of June, we present Noémie Beaulieu and Zed Roy. Back from a long period of convalescence following a severe ankle sprain in late March, Noémie won the Grand Prix de Joliette and Drummondville Series events in the junior category and finished second overall. Then, just a few days after contracting COVID-19, she finished fourth at the World Junior Championships in Montreal, the best Quebec women’s result in history.
For his part, Zed demonstrated his great versatility with his first career podium finish in the Grand Prix Series, followed by a third-place amateur finish in the 70.3 Mont-Tremblant, his first long-distance event. Zed also stands out for his return to the community, having given a talk on his career at a local elementary school.
We spoke to them about their recent performances and their next goals. Read Noémie and Zed’s interview here.
Q1. What are you most proud of in your recent accomplishments?
R1 -Noémie
What makes me most proud of my recent achievements is that my results show that Quebec and Canadian athletes can perform on the international stage by training in our clubs and working their way up through the camps and competitions offered by Triathlon Québec. We’re really well supported, and I hope that my performances, and those of other Quebec athletes, will motivate the next generation to realize that, with effort and consistency, we can all make it.
R1 -Zed
I’m quite proud of my recent performances, but above all of the fact that I’ve achieved so much while having fun both training and competing. My discovery of the 70.3 was a great novelty, and it’s definitely a distance I’ll be revisiting.
Q2. Who has helped you the most so far in your athletic career? Why or why not?
R2 -Noémie
My parents are the people who have helped me the most in my athletic career, because they’ve always been there to support me from the very beginning. I know I can always count on them in good times and bad!
R2 – Zed
Francis Sarrasin Larochelle is definitely the person who has helped me the most in my career! Without his support and involvement with the Quebec team, I clearly wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am today as an athlete! It all started in 2015 when he invited me to the “Project Winnipeg” camp.
Q3. Rank swimming, cycling and running in order of preference.
R3 -Noémie
It depends on the time of year, but at the moment: cycling > running > swimming
R3 -Zed
Running > Cycling > Swimming
Q4. Apart from your sport, what is your greatest passion?
R4 -Noémie
Apart from triathlon, my biggest passion is Formula 1. I really enjoy watching the races and keeping abreast of new technologies!
R4 -Zed
I love bikes! It’s got to have some connection with our sport.
Q5. What are your goals for the current season?
R5 -Noémie
My biggest goal of the season was the World Junior Championships in June. Now that that’s behind me, my aim is to gain international experience all over the place. My season isn’t set in stone yet: we’ll see where triathlon takes me!
R5 – Zed
The biggest goal of the season is the Canadian championship in Gatineau on July 9!
Otherwise, I’m aiming for a top 5 overall in the Grand-Prix Series.
Q6. What is your ultimate goal?
R6 -Noémie
As long as I’m having fun training, I’ll keep on doing triathlons, but I’m not really setting any specific goals. I’ll see where the future takes me!
R6 -Zed
To continue having fun training and competing in triathlons for as long as possible!
