On Saturday evening, our annual gala was held at the Centre des Congrès de Lévis. Organized in conjunction with the Bionick Triathlon club, which we’d like to thank for its involvement and support, the gala was an opportunity to reward the various players in the world of triathlon who distinguished themselves during this rather special 2021 season. Our thanks also go to Maxim Martin, who hosted the evening with brio.
Triathlon Québec President Sophie Yergeau spoke at the start of the evening, taking the opportunity to emphasize the importance and resilience of our clubs and organizing committees in enabling everyone to continue or return to the sport after the rollercoaster 2020 and 2021 seasons.
The evening, which was an opportunity to celebrate athletes, coaches, clubs and event organizers, was also punctuated by announcements. François Caletta and Alain Deraspe, respectively president of the Pentathlon des Neiges and the Xterra Québec series, took to the stage to announce a number of new features for 2022. François Caletta revealed the creation of the Iceman series, a promising winter challenge, while Xterra will be launching a fourth event in the Gaspé Peninsula. Of course, the evening was also an opportunity to highlight our four Olympians, Amélie Kretz, Alexis Lepage, Kyla Rollinson and Marianne Hogan. It was also an opportunity for the first nominee to award four additional bursaries to encourage the next generation of female athletes. A final tribute was also paid to Michel Bernier and Emmanuel Gay, who sadly passed away this year.
Finally, Triathlon Québec General Manager Marie-Eve Sullivan concluded the evening by awarding five jury prizes. The first two prizes recognized the resilience of Francis Bachand andAmélie Kretz, who have faced major challenges in recent months, one recovering from a terrible accident, the other securing Olympic qualification in less than favourable circumstances. The next three awards were aimed at highlighting organizing committees that particularly distinguished themselves during the year 2020, in the midst of the pandemic. These included the courage of the Magog Trimemphré for having been the first large-scale event, the tenacity of the Esprit Montréal Triathlon for having organized an event against all odds, and the generosity of the Osmose Triahlon in Sorel-Tracy for its event dedicated to the next generation, the only race opportunity for youth categories in 2020.
Here is the full list of finalists for the various Triomphe awards, as well as the winners in each category (🏆).
