Équipe du Québec: A successful season launch!

17 April 2022

It’s been a busy few weeks for Team Québec athletes, with several competition and training camp projects on the agenda. The results are in, and the 2022 season looks promising. Here’s a quick summary of the first three months of the year.

Some fifteen athletes were due to take part in a training camp in Florida in early January, where they would carry out a volume of general training to consolidate the foundations they had worked on in the autumn. Unfortunately, the Omicron wave derailed the project and the athletes involved had to continue their routines at home. Other athletes, however, were able to go away for an extended period, notably to Ecuador, for an altitude training camp in preparation for the first competitions of the season. This preparation certainly paid off for Emy Legault, who kicked off her year with two podium finishes in continental races. Pavlos Antoniades, Michaël Simard and Clara Normand also achieved excellent results.

In early March, an impressive contingent of forty athletes and eight coaches headed for Clermont, Florida, for a training trip leading up to the continental competition in Sarasota. Supervised by dedicated coaches and benefiting from additional services such as mobility sessions, physical preparation and massage therapy, the athletes were able to complete their preparation under excellent conditions. The weather forced the delegation to adapt as competitions were postponed by a day due to tornado warnings, then shortened and modified due to very cold temperatures of almost 3 degrees Celsius. Despite this, the athletes bounced back to perform with panache at this eventful Continental Cup. Noémie Beaulieu, Mathis Beaulieu and Emy Legault walked away with medals, and a record number of athletes made it into the event’s top 20.

A few days later, a delegation of eight athletes and two coaches headed for Portugal to take part in the European Continental Cup in Quarteira. The aim of this project was to gain experience in this type of race, where the competition and level of athletes is higher than in North America. The trip was a great learning experience. The highlight of the Quebec delegation was certainly the 9 e place for Maïra Carreau in the junior women’s race.

Competitive opportunities for Team Québec athletes will multiply over the coming weeks, with the continental race in Salinas, Ecuador on April 24 and the junior race in Richmond, Virginia on April 1.st May. We’ll then be keeping an eye on the first leg of the World Series in Yokohama, Japan, which will feature Charles Paquet and Emy Legault, currently in training camp in Flagstaff, Arizona with the national team.
