Postponed twice due to the pandemic, the 55th Jeux du Québec finals finally took place last week in Laval. The wait was well worth it, as the three days of competition enabled the next generation to demonstrate their energy, talent and resilience.
81 athletes from sixteen different regions took part in the program’s three events: super-sprint, time trial and mixed team relay. These were presented at the Centre de la Nature, a race site that showcases beautiful courses and where spectators could send their cheers at many points.
The individual races enabled athletes from eight different regions to shine and win medals. The hotly contested final sprint between Béatrice Normand (Sud-Ouest) and Sara Labrie (Rive-Sud) was a definite highlight of the first race. The two athletes, from two different categories (U17 and U15), won the gold medal, before adding a second the following day in the Time Trial race. Twice, young Robi Racine (Lanaudière) stood atop the podium in the U15 category. Laurent Tétreault (Centre-du-Québec) and Samaël Fleury-Nadeau (Chaudière-Appalaches) won gold medals in the U17 category.
The mixed team relay saw an epic duel between Lanaudière and Centre-du-Québec. The race finally came down to a sprint on the blue carpet, to the advantage of Centre-du-Québec. This latest victory enabled the region to consolidate first place in the delegation rankings, ahead of Lanaudière and Rive-Sud. The Estrie region was awarded the sportsmanship banner.
Finally, Triathlon Québec would like to congratulate all the athletes who took part in the races, highlight the work of the coaches and delegation escorts, and thank all those who contributed to the impeccable running of the competition (volunteers, officials, employees of the Centre de la Nature de Laval, the Jeux du Québec organizing committee and SportsQuébec).
All results are available on the Jeux du Québec website and on Sportstats.
