Sustainable development

The present sustainable development policy is the result of Triathlon Québec’s desire to be a driving force in the Quebec sporting world towards responsible practice. Through this sustainable development policy, the Federation seeks to minimize its own ecological footprint.

The raison d'être of our sustainable development policy

Our policy aims to provide a framework for the organization’s practices, procedures, day-to-day actions, strategic management and development, based on its issues and capabilities. The policy encourages the participation not only of employees, but also of all those who work with the Federation.

Our objectives

Triathlon Québec is determined to position itself as a pioneer of sustainable development in the world of sport in Quebec. We are convinced that a picture is worth a thousand words, and that leadership by example remains the best solution for human, sustainable and ecological progress. With this in mind, we’d like to implement a number of initiatives to encourage other sports organizations to follow suit.

Specific objectives

  • Implementation of ÉcoTQ eco-responsible certification
  • Development of and participation in various initiatives to promote eco-responsibility in sport
  • Communication and promotion of adopted measures

At a time when the transportation sector is responsible for almost half of the province’s greenhouse gas emissions, alternatives to the individual car must be prioritized. This can take the form of using active transport, public transport or carpooling, or reducing the need for transport itself. Where this is not possible, carbon offsetting is a sensible option.

Specific objectives

  • Encourage and publicize carpooling among our employees and technical officials with a reimbursement of an additional $0.10 per kilometer, per trip.
  • Encourage active travel by employees, board members and technical officials
  • Encourage use of public transport by employees, board members and technical officials
  • Encourage telecommuting with a dedicated policy
  • Promote videoconferencing
  • Administering the undocumented board
  • Establish a greenhouse gas emissions balance sheet for employees, board members and technical officials
  • Encourage Team Québec athletes, coaches and technical officials to compensate for air travel.

Well-being, personal fulfillment and respect for human rights are inherent to the notion of sustainable development. It is therefore the employer’s responsibility to ensure the health and safety of its employees. To this must be added the deepening of abilities and the addition of new skills to each employee.

Specific objectives

  • Providing a safe and healthy working environment thanks to the health and safety guide
  • Set up integration processes for new employees (e.g. integration plans)
  • Implement a fair hiring and working conditions policy (e.g.: compensation policy, HR policies and employee handbook)
  • Participate in the in-house training of each employee
  • Offer employees the opportunity to develop their skills within their field of action.
  • Offer reimbursement of up to $300/year per employee for expenses related to health and physical activity.

Triathlon Québec’s mission is characterized by a strong commitment to the society in which it operates. This takes the form of promoting school triathlons, prevention through sport and healthy lifestyle habits, as well as a balanced presence in each sphere of sporting practice (initiation, recreation, competition and excellence).

Specific objectives

  • Recognition and appreciation of volunteer involvement in Federation partner events
  • Employee participation in two volunteer days as part of their working hours (between October 1 and April 30)
  • Participation in conferences on the benefits of sport

The choice of suppliers takes into account the five principles of responsible procurement: exemplarity, governance, equity and efficiency, environmental integrity and socio-economic development. The Federation will therefore give preference to suppliers able to meet these criteria, and not on the basis of financial criteria alone.

Objectives

  • Favoring local, social economy, reintegration and cooperative suppliers, as well as suppliers using organic and local products
  • Favoring recycled and low-emission products

Given that Canada and Quebec are poor performers when it comes to per capita waste production, and that the majority of non-recovered waste comes from non-residential sources, measures need to be put in place to reduce the Federation’s negative impact.

Specific objectives

  • Encourage employees to reuse equipment
  • Encourage the reuse of equipment at events
  • Reduce paper and ink consumption
  • Implement a recycling and composting system
  • Raising employee awareness of energy-saving practices
  • Encouraging employees not to leave electronic equipment on standby
