World Triathlon

The International Triathlon Federation (World Triathlon), founded in 1989, is the governing body for multi-sport disciplines such as triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon, cross-triathlon, winter triathlon, paratriathlon and aqua-biking.

The Federation also organizes world championships in these disciplines. The International Triathlon Federation was created to structure the practice of these disciplines. It played a major role in making triathlon an Olympic discipline in 2000.

The headquarters of the International Triathlon Federation are in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The international triathlon circuit

All competitions are held with “sillonnage”, i.e. athletes can form a peloton on their bikes, as in a bicycle race. The elite category refers to athletes aged 20 and over, although in reality, athletes aged 16 to 19 (junior category) can sometimes compete in the same events.

Competition levels on the international circuit

The international elite triathlon circuit is divided into three levels of competition in which athletes compete.

  1. World Series (WTCS)
  2. World Cup
  3. Continental Cup

Athletes accumulate World Triathlon points over the three levels of competition for the international ranking. An athlete’s best six scores per year will be used to determine his or her ranking.

World Triathlon Series (WTS)

1

The ultimate level of competition, the World Triathlon Series (WTS), generally comprises eight or nine individual events and three mixed-team relay events. A maximum of 55 athletes per gender may start a World Series stage.

The last stage of the calendar, the Grand Final, brings together not only the world’s best athletes, but also those in the junior/U23 and amateur categories for the sprint with furrowing and Olympic without furrowing distances. At the end of the season, the titles of World Champion are awarded to the men and women who have accumulated the most points in the series.

World Cup

2

The second level of competition is the World Cup. There are some fifteen races on all continents. These competitions can be contested over sprint or Olympic distances, or over semi-sprint with a final and semi-final.

Continental Cups

3

The third level of competition is the continental cups. Each continent offers competitions at this level, as well as championships for junior, U23 and elite athletes. In 2025, there will be two races in Quebec, in Magog and Montreal.
