What is the responsible drive movement?

The Responsible Coaching Movement (RCM) will be rolled out in phases throughout the sport system under the leadership of the Coaching Association of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. Ultimately, it has the potential to reach all sport organizations and coaches. MER calls on sport organizations to implement realistic changes within their means.

The MER is the result of extensive consultation with the Canadian sports community, which identified a series of factors that contribute to the occurrence of misconduct in sport, namely the lack of coherent policies, club resources, communication strategies, coach monitoring mechanisms and, finally, a coordinated approach to responsible practices between sports organizations.

The aim of the movement: to make sport safer for children and vulnerable groups. Although the protective measures put in place over the past twenty years have reduced the number of cases of misconduct, we continue to see cases of athlete assault, harassment by coaches and breaches of athlete safety.

The first phase of the responsible training movement comprises three main components:

  • The rule of two
  • Background checks
  • Respect and ethics training
Coaches and sport organizations play a crucial role in the Canadian sport system. They are authority figures, mentors, teachers and role models for athletes.
Coaches and sport organizations are an integral part of the athlete experience. The Responsible Coaching Movement (RCM) is a collaborative effort among all NCCP partners and sanctioned sport organizations to ensure that the influence of coaches is positive for athletes and for Canadian sport.
As a responsible sports federation, Triathlon Québec is proud to be a progressive member of the responsible training movement (MER).
